Box Canyon and Scenic Drive Level 3

Box Canyon and Scenic Drive combines one of central Arizona’s most popular off-road routes with a relaxing scenic return through rugged desert foothills and wide-open Sonoran landscapes west of Highway 93. This route follows the famous Box Canyon trail before transitioning onto maintained backcountry roads that provide an enjoyable and highly scenic drive back toward the highway.

The route travels through narrow canyon walls, sandy washes, rocky desert terrain, and rolling hills that showcase the diversity of the region. Drivers are treated to impressive rock formations, sweeping desert vistas, and numerous photo opportunities throughout the journey. The canyon section is the highlight, featuring towering walls that create a dramatic corridor through the surrounding mountains.

Elevations along the route range from approximately 2,185 feet to 2,660 feet, producing roughly 475 feet of elevation variation. While much of the route is suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, the canyon section may contain loose rock, washouts, erosion, and seasonal obstacles that can increase difficulty depending on recent weather conditions.

After completing Box Canyon, the route transitions onto scenic desert roads that offer a more relaxed driving experience while maintaining excellent views of surrounding mountain ranges and public lands. This combination makes the route ideal for travelers who want both a memorable off-road challenge and a comfortable scenic drive without needing to retrace their path.

This route follows the general path recommended by Trails Offroad through Box Canyon before continuing along a scenic return route toward Highway 93. It serves as an excellent half-day adventure for overlanders, off-road enthusiasts, and visitors looking to experience some of the most picturesque backcountry terrain in the Congress and Wickenburg area.
