Elevation
The route begins near 10,266 feet and steadily climbs into alpine terrain, gaining more than 2,300 feet before reaching a high point around 12,720 feet. Most of the ascent is gradual, with several short steeper sections and rolling terrain before reaching the upper ridges. The trail remains at high elevation for much of the route before descending toward the endpoint.
Terrain
Expect a mix of mountain dirt roads, embedded rock, loose stone, shallow drainage crossings, and occasional narrow shelf-road sections typical of the San Juans. The route follows natural contours along hillsides and ridgelines, with several turns and switchbacks as it gains elevation. During wet weather, traction can become more challenging.
4WD Experience
Most stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles should have little difficulty in dry conditions. Drivers should be comfortable with rocky terrain, mountain exposure, and operating at elevations above 12,000 feet. Low range may be helpful on steeper or rougher sections but is generally not required for the entire route.
Travel Time
The recorded track required approximately 2 hours and 6 minutes to complete. Groups traveling with multiple vehicles, making photo stops, or encountering rough conditions should plan on 2.5 to 4 hours.
